The new law 4070/2012 “Regulations for Electronic Communications, Transport, Public Works and Other Provisions”, tries to rationalize the operation of the gas stations.
More precisely, according to the above mentioned regulation, the previously prohibited minimum safety distance of 80 m of service stations from other buildings and people’s gathering public places, is redefined, for the operation of gas stations, is now set at a distance of 30 m for the gas stations and 50 m for LPG stations or even more the elimination of the above distances under certain protective measures, allowing this way a significant number of buildings to be used on a better business basis.
With the previous legislative framework, until 2017, all the gas stations which are located within a distance of 80 m from buildings where cafés, supermarkets restaurants, offices, hotels with more than 50 rooms, as well as churches, schools, hospitals, are operating, should be closed and relocated.
It is estimated that more than 3,000 gas stations sould have to be closed down to a total of 6,000 currently operating in all over Greece.
However, with the above law, any gas station, after adopting the appropriate safety measures, can continue to operate.
With the corresponding regulations in Law 4070/2012, the operation of service stations is enhanced, so this sector, which, like many others, is experiencing the economic crisis, will be relieved.
In addition to gas and oil fuels, electrification and biofuels are developing, even hydrogen is on the way.
With this regulation, the traditional gas station gives its place to a new form of gas station the “Fuel and Energy Station”. Given that conventional petrol stations are located in strategic places dedicated in servicing all vehicles, they should have available and sell all the new forms of fuel and energy that the future will demand.
More immediate and imperative is, of course, the installation of fast electrics chargers to charge the batteries of electric cars, as the use of these cars is increasingly spreading worldwide.
Also with this specific legislation a constant demand from the owners of the gas stations is satisfied, and this is the establishment of the “Gas station manager”.
At the same time, it is possible to redefine the land uses of the areas already existing a service station and, for those stations which are not relocated due to incompatible land use, they may expand their installations with more environmentally friendly like liquid fuels and gaseous fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas etc.
Finally, besides the traditional gas stations, the law offers the possibility to some parking stations which have large facilities, to sell liquid fuels in the vehicles of their customers. Until now even if there was a similar operation to those of the gas stations, there was not possible for parking to sell fuels. This rule eliminates this exclusion with benefits for business to grow, the environment and the economy as well.
